The Cascadia Pinball Cup 2010

The Portland Cup 2010 will be held on Sunday, November 7th starting at 12:00pm at Slabtown.
The event will cost $42* to enter and the format will consist of 9 qualifying rounds followed by head-to-head final rounds. The schedule of rounds, players, and machines for the qualifying portion of the tournament will be determined from random placement in preset brackets. Those that attended last year’s event, the Slabtown Smackdown, will likely testify that this may be the most laid back tournament in the history of tournaments.

Due to the necessity of configuring brackets and printing tournament material, there will be a designated registration period in advance of the tournament. This will be the only way to register for this event! The registration period will open at noon on September 1st and close at noon on October 1st. Paypal is the recommended form of payment, and the link for registration will be posted on this thread for the designated time.

Games and player configurations will be randomly assigned prior to the event so that everything can run itself with ease. Everyone will draw a number from a hat (the morning of) to see where they are placed within the matrix of players and games. Other than treasury duties (i.e. bringing the money), this tournament will be run by the players, including finding your next match, deciding order, keeping score, recording score and handling any issues that may arise during each match.

Each player will be guaranteed 9 rounds of 4 player matches before the top 12 contestants move on to the final rounds. Just like last year we will try to make sure you are playing with a new group of 3 and a different game for all 9 rounds. Each match will be recorded with the winner receiving 4pts, 2nd 2pts, 3rd 1pt, and 4th will receive 0pts.

The finals however are going to be different. First off, 12 players will advance with the top 4 getting a bye. In case of any ties at any rank there will be a one game playoff with the winner/winners receiving the higher rank. Rounds will be played best of 5 head to head matches. Games and play order will be chosen by players in alternating order with the highest seed receiving first choice of machine or position. Final rounds will proceed in a single elimination fashion according to the final rounds bracket. There will be a playoff for 3rd place between the two semifinalist losers (i.e. 3rd and 4th) in the same best of 5 format. There will also be a single 4 player game between the 5th-8th players to determine their final rankings.

Cash Prizes (% of total prize pool)

1st = 34%
2nd = 20%
3rd = 14%
4th = 8%
5th = 8th = 4%
9th=12th = 2%

*Payment includes entry into the tournament and covers any Paypal fees, printing expenses as well as cost for a trophy. Any surplus in cash will be used to help cover coin drop during the finals. All coin drop must be paid by the players.

We will be using what ever machines Slabtown has, we are not asking to switch anything out or around, however it may happen. We will choose the 9 'best tournament' games we feel that are there.

I was expecting the 36 to be determined by an algorithm - weekly standings for the past year x message board post count = entry. Some sort of crazy algorithm like that!

Just change the name of it to Backglass Cup. Filling it with a nice Jasmine Tea. Hell yeah.

Due to our belief that there is a big interest for this tournament we are no longer limiting the entries to 36 players. Open registration will still start Sept. 1 at noon and will last 2 weeks. More details will be released later this week.

We will be using as many players as we have entered divided by 4. So 48 players means 12 machines. We would like to use all Ricochet machines if possible and I will talk to Brinda and Sam about maybe bringing in a few more up by the front window. Bring all the booths down again and line both walls with machines would be pretty sweet.

Of course we would prefer tournament friendly games, no building jackpot, or steal someones score on ball 3, or hit this ramp 30 times. I would actually prefer another EM or two. If we use 9-12 machines why not have 2-3 EM, 2-3 system 11's, 2-4 WPC and 1-2 Stern's.

I could wire the tilt switch to the center ramp on Police Force and make the perfect tournament machine. :lol:

I kinda like it. I figure, as long as we display the settings for each game all's fair and game!

A few changes here. Posted just above and replace the initial post too. Basically we are not limiting the entries, however there is a 2 week period which is the ONLY TIME TO SIGN UP! Also, change payouts to %'s and just cleared up a few more things. So let's make sure Fred and I didn't waste our time arguing, and at some boints yelling at each other over whether or not to change the tournament or just say GFY to those that signed up 37th and later.

What happens when an odd number of people show up? Say 37 or 41. Would you just have an odd man out for each of the 9 rounds that scoop up an effortless 4 boints?

Basically we will be having a limited registration following the open registration to fill in the final 1, 2, or 3 spots to make the total entries a multiple of 4. We do not recommend waiting for limited registration. If we cannot fill those final few spots then we will just have a have a few matches with only 3 players.

hope that makes sense, it can't be worse then what I had up here earlier...jesus.

I figured as much. I like that better than my idea to boot the last 1-3 registrants to level out the groups. I'm very excited for this, btw.

I think that a lot of people are. After we posted everything, I sent Fred an email listing 33 people that I am 98% certain plan to play. Also another list of 15+ that I would consider 50/50. So we made the changes to make room for everyone! Last year was a blast and this year is going to be even better!
