should be interesting to see how the format compares to the cascadia tourney. i'll be lowballing the radisson greentree on priceline every day until cheap (~$40/night) rooms are available, and share the info here once i'm able to book.

This sounds pretty fun - it's $100, but you get to play a mighty amount of pinball for your money. Very similar to the casual flow style that will take place at the cascadia cup. The cool thing about this tho, is that after the first day of pinball . . . EVERYONE "qualifies", into a different division (A, B, C), based on their win/loss record from the first day. After the 2nd day if you've qualified within your division you advance. If you don't make it to the finals on the 3rd day, you get put in the consolation bracket and play a double elimination tournament with all the other losers for a $300 or $400 prize.

I like the idea cuz it doesn't give an advantage to anyone with a heavy pocketbook and for your $100 you get to play competitive pinball with people in your skill relative skill level for 3 days. You play 30 games over the course of the 2 day qualifying period.

Round Trip flights to/from pdx appear to be about $400 on SW.

it's worth noting that if the entry fee is too steep, people can still come to the facility and play games all weekend. this is a great chance to play games you won't see elsewhere.

So you are looking at a $500 trip minimum. I'll stick with Cascadia and try to hit PAPA first.

You're looking at more than $500 when you add room/food etc, so comparing it directly with the Cascadia event in terms of cost is pointless. They're in completely different ballparks.

I WOULD compare it to PAPA though. For a more casual player, I think this format sounds pretty cool. In fact, I might even go as far to say the "fun" factor might be higher than the open qualifying format (just like someone *might* have more fun at Cascadia than the Showdown . . .)

After all . . . it's more casual flow.

And as Deathsave mentioned - the facility is open and THAT was the highlight of PAPA for me. Playing all those rare games in top shape (for dollars) is a blast.

Yeah, this looks totally cool. Interesting how they are dealing with the multiples of four issue by adjusting the 3 player groups to play 4 games. I also like the idea of having the sidepot. That kind of ups the ante without making the entry prohibitively expensive. Seems like the consolation tournament could get crazy, like 100+ people in a double-elimination bracket crazy! Oh, and if you want to compare to the cascadia cup, I would just look at the cost of each game. pinburgh w/sidepot: $200/30 games = $6.66 (evil), cascadia cup: $40/9 games = $4.44 (not evil). :P

This format will definitely mean more play time for the average person than regular PAPA, it seems interesting. I like the idea of just getting to play without thinking about too much, other than playing... at PAPA you have to be conscious of your bad games and how the other games affect your current card. In this format, it's more of just a "play your best, and if you lose, oh well."

I'm definitely considering going... I love that place and all the machines in one place is intoxicating (so is the drinking outside in the alley).

Let me know if you guys have any questions about the tournament, format, games, whatever. I'm excited to host this thing and hope to see as many of you as possible -- wish I could make the airfares cheaper, of course!!

I'm still hoping to make a Portland trip sometime in the next year or two. Take care!

Okay, I'm officially in. Signed up today.

Now on to flight and hotel... hopefully have enough miles.

Does anyone need a roomie? I don't snore very loud, ask Opto.

I'm working on getting a credit card with some bonus sign-up miles anyway. If that works out then I'm in too. Let's stay in touch.

I'm looking more for a no-touch roommate... being married with a kid and all. But Isaac, I'm flattered...

I'm driving in from the D and would throw down for a no-touch roomie. During PAPA I ended up sleeping in the back of my Blazer, but I think I finally have the funds to splurge on a motel. HIGH ROLLER!

Let's go suckas! More players! Over 130 players = BIGGER PRIZES. Someone from Portland should win this thing.

(End of today's shameless plug.)

See you next month at Slabtown! I'm excited for my first-ever trip to Portland, and I'm sure I will get some great advice on where to go while in town. I have been told that I must bring home some donuts...

Thanks!

Be careful not to spend too much time in there or your clothes will forever carry the scent of doughnuts.

Looking forward to having you out!
