Slabtown Tournament Thursday 7/9 7:00pm

Postby Dropshot on Mon Jul 06, 2009 4:04 pm

With the addition of Whirlwind, Dr. Dude, The Getaway, and Johnny Mnemonic on top of Congo, Medieval Madness and The Addam's Family it is only fair to say...DAMN! And with that this Thursday (7/9) at 7:00pm there will be a head to head single game double elimination tournament. $5 entry with multiple cash prizes to the top finishers.

i have tentative thu-sun plans but if they fall through, i'm there. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY DR. DUDE.
This isn't a problem with tungsten bulbs because the filament remains red hot for a short duration after voltage is removed - long enough to appear lit persistently.

We're also adding a TZ to the line-up this Tues, hope it fits and I hope they have enough power to support them all otherwise it will be RESET-mania!

The folks at the bar are aware of this. 4 of the machines are on one circuit, 3 on another. So long as there aren't any other power hungry appliances sharing the same circuit (i.e. a dish washer) it shouldn't be a problem.

I thought you were your own power supply source and I figured worse case scenario just plug a few of those games into you, give you some space and watch the magic happen.

Since there will be twice as many machines as normal I am pondering a $10 entry and making it a best 2 of 3 double elimination tournament. It should run pretty close to the same amount of time, maybe even faster except when we get down to 4 people. But with that much cash at stake it could be fun to have a crowd watching and that much more pressure. If this were to be the case and 16 people showed up I would pay out the top 6 finishers.

2 tied for 6th- $5 each
4th- $10
3rd- $15
2nd- $20
1st- $105

Or something along those lines..... yes....no....???

I'm down with a $10 entry, but I think the top prize should be at least double what we give out for a $5 entry.

1st place has been winning about $70 right now and second gets $10 so maybe...

1st- $140
2nd- $10
3rd- $5
4th- $5

based on 16 people....any more than 16 the first ten goes to a 5th and 6th split an addition ten gets split between 1st and 2nd an additional ten gets split between 1st and 3rd. Yeah this could go on. Payouts are as shown above in this response and due to change/raise based on turnout.

Those machines are permanent additions (I mean, more-or-less) to Slabtown, right?

And they are there already?!

(I can't make this tourney  )

Yes, the machines have been installed and from what I understand are there to stay. I thought TZ would be replacing an existing machines, but it didn't, and so for the time being there are 8 MACHINES IN SLABTOWN!!!!

All of the new games are playing great. JM and HSII are particularly fast and crisp (it's so nice to play a Getaway with strong flippers!). The TZ is in great shape but was playing a little slow for my taste and the ball kept getting hung up on the slot machine scoop.

This should be an awesome tournament!!

I feel like weekly tourney's should stay $5. $10 scares off players that feel like their chances are slim. It's often the same people battling it out at the end. A handful of players come out for the thrill and don't mind losing $5 as bad as $10 hurts when you already feel like your chances are slim. "It's more fun to compete" is the slogan. Having more people to compete with, and get excited about pinball, should be the goal, more than seeing how much you can take from them. I am cocky enough to think that I will take some money home, I think maybe it should be planned more than 1 day and hype it a bit. Shorty's went up to $10 very briefly. When attendance went from 16 to 4 players, they went back to $5. Many people are broke and not as good as others. Just food for thought. I need friends in pinball more than I need dead presidents.

I know...it may scare people off and that's where I am torn, I don't want to lose the turnout or make people feel like we are trying to just take money. I also don't want to do a $5 entry and have a best 2 of 3. You are guaranteed 4 games instead of 2 so the cost should be double. With 8 machines a single game double elimination will be over in an hour. Maybe we just have two of them then. First game can be $5 then.....everyone show up and we will decided then...if people want $5 then we will do $5 if EVERYONE wants $10 then we will do $10. For $5 I think it should be single game though....and for those that want we can do another one afterwards.

That's interesting. Rules can always be modified prior to the start. I guess let's see who we can get out and what the vibe is. Opinions are obviously welcomed. An after tourney for the players that the competitive fire burns hotter for, sure, I'm there. I'll bring a headband. and some soda.
