I played a game of each and left a few repair requests with the owner. Hopefully Glen will get out and shop a couple of flipper issues....

He won his Round 1 match, but so many people got byes that no one started getting eliminated until Losers 2.

Can the new kick ass software spit out a bracket so all will be revealed? My money is on yes.

Yup! It will be able to create and upload screenshots, but not for a couple weeks :(

Jake, there were 23 players in the bracket on Tuesday. A bracket can only be sized to a power of 2, so we played a 32 player bracket (16 rounds, 2 players each).

Once the player list is randomized, the first 16 players get placed into position 1 of each of match. Then the remaining 7 players get fit into the bracket to keep it balanced (top, bottom, middle, middle, etc), leaving 9 players with no one to play in round 1, thus getting a bye.

Here's a screenshot of the tournament for reference. Technically 8 bye players got last place, but those arn't listed in the results.

(edit: 8 bye players got last, not 16; also a power of 2, not multiple)

Just updated the calender and send in a shit load of results. Now leave me alone. Give it a day or so and let me know if I missed anything. I sent in from Slingshot up until now.

WTF 16 bye's is that what your saying? sorry still don't see it why not a 24 person bracket? just seems like a crazy amount of byes to someone who knows nothing of bracketology. maybe I should not ask such ??'s! the least amount of byes possible should always be what is used am I wrong in thinking that?

Whoops, actually 8 bye players got last place.

A 24 player bracket can't work because each round needs to have exactly half the matches of the previous round.

Imagine a single elimination 24 player bracket. After each round, half the remaining players are eliminated.

Round 1: 24 players in 12 matches
Round 2: 12 players in 6 matches
Round 3: 6 players in 3 matches
Round 4: 3 players in 1.5 matches?

By round 4, a player would get a bye near the end of the tournament because there's not enough people for them to play. Which is extremely unfair considering how would you even decide which player gets the bye.

A 32 player bracket works a little bit better all the byes are given randomly at the start. It works even better with seeded tournaments because the top players may start the tournament with a first round bye. BTW, this will happen at Pintoberfest unless we get exactly 40 or 72 players entered during qualifying.

The bracketing algorithm and player placement works exactly like any other bracket system ever created, and it was the first thing I perfected when I wrote the prototype 6 months ago.

Thanks for the explanation Isaac! It'd be cool if the "non byes" were given to folks who've never played a weekly or something like that. While weighting the weekly players probably isn't worth the effort, a simple "first time player doesn't get a bye" rule could be cool.
