The Northwest Oh-Pin

The Location Vintage Arcade will be hosting Eugene's first major pinball Tournament!

This is a one day tournament with qualifications running from 11am until 7pm.

All novices and wizards are welcome. After initial qualification play, the top qualifiers will compete for cash prizes. The top 4 novice players who don't qualify will play a one game playoff to win a Pirates of the Caribbean Zizzle pinball machine.

This tournament is sanction by the IFPA as a full boints tournament.

When: Saturday, August 6--11am until the end

Where: The Location Vintage Arcade, 245 Blair Blvd., Eugene, OR

Who: This is an all ages/all skill levels tournament. If pinball excites you, then you should come and play.

Cost: An initial buy-in of $10 will get you one game on each of the six machines. After that, the cost is $3 per ticket or 4 for $10.

Lineup: We intend to pick 6 machines from the following list. When we get closer to the date, we will confirm the lineup.

Captain Fantastic
Aztec
Whirlwind
Stikes and Spares
Flash Gordon
Banzai Run
Black Knight
Grand Lizard

Payout: We will take either the top 12 qualifiers or top 16 qualifiers for the finals. If we take 12 qualifiers, the payouts will be something like

1st = 34%
2nd = 20%
3rd = 14%
4th = 8%
5th = 8th = 4%
9th=12th = 2%

As mentioned above, the top 4 novice players who don't qualify for the finals will have a one game playoff. The winner will win a Pirates of the Caribbean Zizzle pinball machine. 2nd through 4th will receive other consolation prizes. The novice playoff will not affect the final rankings of the tournament.

Classification as a Novice: This is the tricky bit. Hayden Harker will make the final decision whether someone can be classified as a novice. He will make this decision based on his knowledge of the player as well as the opinions of Eric Merchant, Scotty McLean, Gavin Keable, Aaron Nelson, and Noah Davis.

Tiebreakers: Any tiebreakers to determine placement for the finals or during the finals will be played on Baby Pac-Man.

The tournament machines will be on free play. Your cost will be ticket purchase.

However, the arcade will still be open for quarter drop: pins and arcade games....if you need a break from the tournament.

Word videomode. I looked up the ruleset and that game has a lot going on. The cool thing is it isn't plagued with the "system 11 progressive jackpot", so from what I gather it would make a decent tournament machine. Certainly one you don't see to often in competitive play, which I think is pretty cool.

Hey Hayden, the event sounds really fun!

One thing to note:

"Tiebreakers: Any tiebreakers to determine placement for the finals or during the finals will be played on Baby Pac-Man."

There is absolutely no way I would ever attend a tournament with a rule like that, I imagine others would feel the same.

Unless I am misunderstanding, all tiebreakers, those on the bubble, those that determine placement and therefore CASH prizes, and even perhaps who wins the entire event has a possibility of being determined on baby pac? a video pin hybrid?

I tend to agree with Cayle on that one. Say the finals come down to a tiebreaker . . . just doesn't seem right to have the two top players playing off on something that heavily relied on non-pinball based skillz. Or for that matter - 2 folks tied at 17th having to play off for the 16th spot. A random draw of the 6 machines is always a good way to handle this type of thing . . . or the in a finals playoff, maybe the higher seeded qualifier has choice of game or position? I can't remember how that usually works.

However - I think Baby Pacman would make a killer side tournament machine . . . maybe set it to 50 cents or a buck a play (if possible) and winner takes the cashbox

Cool, I'll definitely be making it down for this.

Regarding tiebreakers, I agree with Noah and Cayle. It seems quite random to use a (mostly) non-pinball based game to break ties in a pinball tournament.

I'm disappointed. I was trying to get some righteous indignation with that Baby Pac-Man rule. Instead I get calm comments from Eric about how it seems "quite random" and Noah presenting a scenario where somebody might get upset.

At least Cayle said he wouldn't attend such a tournament. I guess that's the best I'll get.

So much for that. Of course, tiebreakers will be played on a random game drawn from the tournament machines.

For the record, I wouldn't trust my baby pac skills in any situation...Centipede on the other hand would be a different story.

So who's going down for this? Could be good thread for organizing rides 'n' such (my car is already full).

Here's the folks I'm pretty sure are going so far -

Noah
Eric
Dennis
Mike Mahaffey
Aaron

Still a month out, so obviously anything can happen/change.

Not really, its a poster to praise our newest pin capt fantastic.
The poster was designed from the instruction manual, even gave it the same paper texture as the manual. The idea came from chad and garth who have never seen the GK pinbrawl poster.
But as you said it is similar in that its a capt fantastic tourney poster, next year will feature a different pinball persona.
I am going to try to get dr dude up for the next one.

Considering BK's popularity . . . I've never really played a nice one. Looking forward to it being in the lineup.

The other WMS split level game strategies are pretty much "keep the ball up top" with the exception of Jungle Lord.

Does anyone know any strategies for BK?
