SPL finals

Postby deathsave on Mon Dec 13, 2010 1:37 pm

congrats to robert gahn-yo for winning the SPL finals on saturday. dude is on a roll! we had a ton of people, competitors and non-competitors alike, watching and cheering during the final game on T2.

this bumps him up to the top-ranked canadian player. we should see some interesting back-and-forth from robert and eden next year.

Do to some unfathomable/last-second non-decision making, this tournament featured the wacky "player with less losses left" gets to choose machine or position rule. So you had people like Mitch, who started out relatively lower ranked, choosing his own machine over and over and over again. WPT was my go-to jam, then they took it out of the tourney for some lousy side tourney that didn't actually happen... and then I lost on Silverball Mania. Uh, aside from that it was fun. Thanks Jeffsave!

Sounds like Jeff needs to get his shit together, or is it just all of Seattle Pinball???

We still should have a Portland v Seattle sometime.

I'm guessing that's the participants over the entire last year, member and non alike. 30-40 were at this one. As far as I know, Jefff had nothing to do with the unusual format. It was an interesting experiment, kind of liked it. Just gotta randomize things..

portland vs. seattle would be fun. in order to get enough people we should do it the night before a major, maybe the next pinbrawl.

we're doing seattle vs. vrpa sometime in january. i'll let you know how that format works out.

Most likely 10, this format is very hard to pull off since there will be much more players from Portland than Seattle. So most likely it would end up being 4 v 4 and not even worth doing.

For a Seattle vs Portland event, each team would limit the number of players to the top 12 or 8 or whatever you wanted it to be. For us, it was easy to do by league rankings. Since you don't have a formal league, maybe you would go by WPPRs. You keep going down the list until you get your team. We could do the same thing, so that we both had the same criteria.

As for the SPL finals, I hated that format and never want to use it again. I was out voted when we were originally discussing it. I don't think it is right to play decent all year, just to drop several spots in the finals. The modified version we did with the VRPA actually turned out to be a lot of fun. Julie

I'm not sure I get why we'd both need to follow the same criteria when picking a team.

Portland Pinball League is a formal league. We have one here. But I'm pretty sure this idea isn't "league vs league." It's Portland vs Seattle.

Yeah, we thought about trying to do some sort of Portland vs Seattle thing. Seems like it could work if it was like the night before GK or Shorty's or something where people are already in the same place. The only thing is, like Aaron said, you will probably end up with a totally disproportionate amount of people. At least that's what has happened in the past when we tried to do a battle. I would say there's easily 20 people here that would want to participate. The WPPR thing is interesting though. Still, that's not really representative of Portland's finest since some people show up to the weeklies and some don't :(
