C-Bar Tournament

Posted: June 23rd, 2009 by dropshot

This Thursday (6/25) at C-Bar. 7:00 pm. The current line-up is 24, Theatre of Magic, Roadshow, Addams Family, Scared Stiff. There will  be a beer special for all that participate ($1 PBR) so drink up and tip your bartender. Also, there will be rubber footings placed under the back legs of TAF so it isn’t as floaty. Heads up single game double elimination will be the format.  $5 to enter with pay-outs to the top 3 finishers. Hope to see you all there!

we should make a “no-theater rape” rule just to make TOM more interesting/faster.

I think you can do what you want…you and I both used that strategy against each other and I’m not so sure either of us broke 1 bil. It’s to hard to say no you can’t do it because your bonus in the game is a huge part of your score and all I’d have to say to get around that is “well I am working on getting my multipliers up right now, what’s wrong with that?” Which arguably is probably the smartest thing to do, same in TOTAN, multipliers and lamp can make for huge points. I know what you are saying though and I don’t think enough people know it or want to even do it because of it’s boring repetitiveness.

Agreed. As boring and time consuming as it is, I don’t think you can ban a strategy.

As of Sunday night, the ball is a lot harder to catch coming out of the pop bumpers which means building the Theatre letter bonus is a much more dangerous strategy.

you have a hard time remembering because you went down in flames and i had a billion on my first ball. at least that’s what i remember…

maybe we should just make a rule against shooting the left loop. where’s that piece of foam when we need it? maybe there should be a no-traps rule on theater. or a pre-game beer requirement. blahblahblah

“the ball is a lot harder to catch coming out of the pop bumpers which means building the Theatre letter bonus is a much more dangerous strategy.”

psht. I love wailing on that Theatre loop, but I always do it as a reflex shot as it comes out of the loop. That’s the way to rack up the bonii without boring yourself.

I wonder if Big Buck Hunter will award you for trapping…? That would be so cool!

has there ever been a scoring switch inside a flipper? that would be an interesting feature. there could be a little timer for ball contact, and you could get like a thousand points every time you cradle the ball for more than a couple seconds. potential to make that suck would be there, but only an asshole would flip the ball slightly up and trap again over and over. maybe it would be a good setup on a game where post passes were tougher, or there could be some kind of timer for how long the ball has to leave the flippers before you can score again…

there have been reports to me of issues with games, I was down there two nights ago and am aware and they are being dealt with for those concerned…minor issues like the right flipper on TOM being so sensitive will have to be dealt with…but everything else should be up and running.

aaron is there going to be free chips, too? Free chips would make this tournament the best!

Chips??? There won’t be any chips but I can bring you some crackers?

i just want to take a moment to apologize to myles for throwing that game to him on TOM, and congratulate him on his win. obviously he’s a good player, and intentionally handing him that game wasn’t respectful to his playing ability.

i got frustrated because we took TOM out of the tourney lineup at GK because of exactly that theater rape strategy and how long the games would get, and since this was a friendly/weekly tournament it seemed silly to let those games go for an hour and slow everything else down. by my 3rd game in a row on it i felt like i would rather take a loss and actually have to do something competitive, like come from the loser’s bracket to win.

but that was kind of dumb, and not the experience i was looking for from a tournament– it’s not really fair to the tournament’s competitiveness to intentionally not play your best. i had mixed emotions about why i was even playing in the tournament. i really like the special kind of focus that it brings out. you don’t get that every day out playing by yourself. playing theater like that did NOT make me feel good, or happy. it kind of bummed me out.

but i learned from it that there’s really no point in trying to shape your own experience in a tournament. it’s still just you and the game. show no mercy and let the other player do the same. seriously though, in the future since we can’t make adjustments to these machines ourselves, can we PLEASE choose machines in a way that will exclude those super long games as much as possible? a long battle is cool on a tough game, but TOM is often a lot longer than any of the other games around it.

cocngrats again to myles and to dennis for knocking me out on 24 while that fucking lame asshole hippie pounded the shit out of theater. i was paying more attention to him than my ball, and was trying to play uber-gentle because i was sure that dude was going to slam the table into the wall or bump into me and danger/tilt my ball. fun tournament, nice turnout, great competition.

  11. Aaron   27 Jun 09 at 12:39 pm

Yeah for being a hippie he had some anger problems…I almost said something to him that we had a tourney going on and to take it easy. I know what your saying about TOM, I played all 4 of my games on Roadshow and each game I cared less and less. I don’t think we can eliminate games with 16 people and 4/5 machines. If we drop TOM people would bitch that 24 is still in, maybe not. Other than that great tourney, nice job Miles. Next Thursday at the Goodfoot!
